In these engravings and paintings from the 1850s, we catch a glimpse of the struggles faced by sick individuals throughout history. Luther's dear friend Philipp Melanchthon is depicted as very ill, prompting Luther to fervently pray for his recovery. The presence of the elector Johann Friedrich visiting Martin Luther during his own illness speaks to the importance placed on supporting those who are unwell. Another engraving shows Luther surrounded by pest-ridden sick persons in Wittenberg, highlighting the devastating impact of diseases on communities. In yet another scene, an exhausted Luther receives solace from an old monk, emphasizing the toll that sickness can take on both body and mind. Moving away from religious imagery, a painting by Mikhail Nesterov portrays a hermit walking along a lake with white hair and beard, perhaps symbolizing age and frailty often associated with illness. Meanwhile, "The Plague of Ashdod" depicts the Philistines struck down by disease in biblical times. A more hopeful image emerges in "The Miracle at the Pool of Bethesda, " where Jesus heals a paralyzed man near Jerusalem's pool frequented by other suffering individuals. This serves as a reminder that even amidst sickness and despair, there can be moments of miraculous healing. Shifting our focus to medical care practices over time, Gustav Budkovski's painting captures a doctor examining a sick woman while holding her urine sample—a testament to early diagnostic methods. Karl Aspelin's artwork showcases a doctor making house calls—an essential service for patients unable to travel due to their illnesses. Nikolai Zagorsky's painting transports us into a regional hospital setting in 19th-century Russia—highlighting how institutions were established to provide care for large numbers of sick individuals within communities. Lastly, Francisco Jover y Casanova's oil painting depicts Cardinal Francisco Jimenez de Cisneros liberating Christian prisoners afflicted with illness in Oran.
