In the depths of sorrow, nature weeps with us. The Clematis macropetala Wesselton, its delicate petals tinged with a somber hue, stands as a symbol of grief and longing. Nearby, the Stuart Monument rises solemnly against the sky, a testament to enduring sadness designed by the Italian Neoclassical architects in 1817-1819. Inside the National Sculpture Museum, Gregorio Fernandez's Pieta captures an eternal moment of sorrow. The intricate details on each figure's face reflect their anguish and heartache. Just as poignant is Vincent van Gogh's "Old Man in Sorrow (On the Threshold of Eternity)" painted in 1890; his brushstrokes convey raw emotion that resonates deeply within our souls. Amidst this sea of melancholy artistry, vibrant poppies emerge like fleeting moments of solace. The Iceland poppy Papaver nudicaule blooms defiantly against despair while Welsh poppy Meconopsis cambrica offers a ray of hope amidst darkness. Yet even amongst human interactions, sorrow finds its place. In "Goodbye, " a dapper gentleman breaks devastating news to his partner - their expressions etched with pain and loss. Meanwhile, an angelic presence emerges from Leonardo da Vinci's "Study for an Angel in The Sorrowful Mysteries, " offering comfort and solace to those who seek it. The Mater Dolorosa or Sorrowing Virgin gazes upon us from her oil-painted panel created between 1480-1500; her eyes filled with tears mirroring our own sorrows. Similarly evoking empathy is Christ depicted on panel circa 1656 - His suffering transcending time and space. Even physiognomical studies delve into understanding human emotions during times of distress. From Mecanisme de la Physionomie humaine ou analyse comes detailed observations capturing every nuance of sorrow etched upon faces, revealing the universality of this emotion.
