Theophile Alexandre Steinlen was a renowned artist known for his satirical illustrations and lithographs that depicted various social issues of the early 20th century. His works were often featured in publications such as "L'Assiette au Beurre" and "Gil Blas, " where he used his artistic skills to shed light on the injustices and miseries faced by different segments of society. One notable piece, titled "Misery of the Horse, " published in L'Assiette au Beurre on June 10, 1905, captured the plight of horses subjected to harsh working conditions. Through this print, Steinlen highlighted the exploitation and suffering endured by these animals. Another striking artwork was featured on the cover of L'Assiette au Beurre on November 14, 1903. Titled "Le pimp naturel des jugeurs - Social, Police - Beef, " this lithograph exposed corruption within law enforcement agencies. It portrayed a judge being influenced by external factors while making decisions related to social issues. In one of his covers for L'Assiette au Beurre from February 26, 1902, Steinlen tackled themes like anticlericalism and colonization. The lithograph titled "Crimes of the Church, Colonies" criticized both religious institutions and European colonial powers for their oppressive actions. Steinlen's versatility as an artist is evident in his diverse range of subjects. He also created illustrations for literary magazines like Gil Blas and Le Petit Sou-Journal de Defense Sociale. One example is an illustration from April 2nd, 1898 issue of Gil Blas depicting racism in provincial areas through a love story involving peasants with contrasting backgrounds. Apart from his socio-political commentaries, Steinlen also showcased his talent in other genres such as landscapes and portraits.
