The Temple of Bacchus, located in Baalbeck (Heliopolis), is a magnificent ancient structure that has captivated visitors for centuries. This temple, also known as the Colonnade Du Temple Du Soleil, stands as a testament to the grandeur and architectural prowess of its time. Dating back to 1849-1851, this temple was captured in stunning detail by photographers during that era. One such image can be found in plate 79 from Volume II of The Holy Land. The Temple of Bacchus is an awe-inspiring sight with its intricate carvings and towering columns. Its beauty is further enhanced by photochrom prints from around c. 1880-1900 which bring out the vibrant colors and details of this ancient wonder. Stepping inside this historic site reveals an interior view that showcases both its former glory and transformation into the church of S. Urbano over time. Two miles away lies another remarkable find - a garden and house built for Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais (1732-99), adding to the rich history surrounding this area. Not only does Baalbek boast architectural marvels like the Temple of Bacchus but it also holds other significant treasures like The Calf-Bearer and Kritios Boy statues discovered nearby on Acropolis grounds.
