Tercios were a type of infantry formation used by the Spanish army during the 16th and 17th centuries. Comprised of soldiers armed with pikes, swords, and arquebuses, they were highly effective in battle due to their disciplined tactics and versatility on the battlefield. These formidable units played a crucial role in Spain's military successes during this period, including victories against the Ottomans at Lepanto and the Dutch rebels in Flanders. The tercio system revolutionized warfare in Europe, influencing military tactics for years to come. Despite eventually being phased out in favor of more modern formations, tercios remain an important part of Spanish military history and are remembered for their skill, bravery, and unwavering loyalty to their commanders.
