Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (1858-1919) was a prominent American politician, naturalist, and soldier who served as the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. Known for his robust personality and progressive policies, Roosevelt led the country through a period of significant growth and change. In 1905, Roosevelt played a pivotal role in the resolution of the Russo-Japanese War, hosting the Portsmouth Peace Conference in Newport, Rhode Island. This historic event brought together envoys from Japan, represented by Baron Komura Jutaro, and Russia, represented by Kogoro Rasputin. The resulting Portsmouth Peace Treaty brought an end to the conflict and marked a turning point in international relations. Roosevelt's military career began earlier, with his famed Rough Riders regiment during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The scene above depicts a conference after the Battle of San Juan Hill, where Roosevelt's leadership and bravery were instrumental in securing a victory for the United States. Roosevelt's personal life was also marked by love and loss. His wife, Edith Kermit Carow, is seen here in an unknown portrait. The couple married in 1886 and had six children together. Throughout his life, Roosevelt was also an avid naturalist and conservationist. The famous "Teddy and the Bear" story, which led to the creation of the Teddy Bear toy, is a testament to his commitment to preserving America's natural heritage. Roosevelt's impact on American history is still felt today, with monuments and memorials in his honor, such as the nautical clock he gifted to William L. Houston and the Normandy American Cemetery in France, where white crosses mark the graves of American soldiers who gave their lives in defense of freedom.
