The Toby Jug, a beloved ceramic collectible, has a rich history dating back to the late 18th century. One of the earliest examples is the Rodneys Sailor Toby Jug, created by Ralph Wood the Younger in Staffordshire between 1780 and 1790. This charming piece depicts a sailor with his pipe and hat, capturing the essence of maritime life during that era. Another notable the Staffordshire creamware version from around 1785. Made of glazed earthenware, this jug showcases intricate details and craftsmanship. Its distinctive shape and characterful face make it a true treasure for collectors. In the early 19th century, D. & J. Henderson Co introduced their own rendition of the Toby Jug in 1828/30. Their creation exudes elegance with its refined features and classic design. Fast forward to the early 20th century, Cleo Lovett crafted an exquisite Toby Mug in 1937. With its whimsical charm and playful expression, this mug adds a touch of joy to any collection. Ray Price's Ceramic Pitcher from 1935-1942 showcases vibrant colors and intricate patterns that are simply captivating. It serves as both functional drinkware and an artistic masterpiece. One cannot discuss Toby Jugs without mentioning their association with folklore tales like "Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum. " These jugs often feature characters from English Fairy Tales such as giants or heroes like Dick Whittington holding his cat on top of a high-backed chair. Throughout history, people have cherished these unique pieces; even today they continue to captivate collectors worldwide. From vintage photographs showcasing women proudly displaying their prized jugs to chromolithographs depicting their beauty - each piece tells its own story. John Cutting's creations in particular stand out - whether it be his delightful Toby Mugs or his charming two-piece set from around 1936 featuring intricate detailing that brings these characters to life.
