Joanna of Castile, known as Joanna the Mad (1479-1555), once detained in Tordesillas, a historic Spanish city. The city is also known for the Tordesillas Map of 1494, created by Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas, which marked the line of demarcation between the Spanish and Portuguese territories in the New World. The map includes depictions of the Bahamas and South America. The city's rich history is further reflected in its Gothic art, with detailed frontals of the Tordesillas altarpiece, featuring scenes from the Flight into Egypt and the Adoration of the Magi, also the site of the meeting between King John II of Castile, called the Perfect Prince (1455-1494), and Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) before his historic voyage to the New World. The city's significance in the exploration and colonization of the Americas is further highlighted in the 1601 map of South America and the 1502 world map named after Alberto Cantino.
