Once upon a time, in a world of picture-perfect swans and elegant lilies, an unlikely hero emerged from the murky waters. The Ugly Duckling, with feathers all askew and a waddle that was far from graceful, was scorned by all. But as Heath Robinson's whimsical illustrations for Hans Christian Andersen's tale reveal, appearances can be deceiving. The Cat said, "Can you purr?" The River Highwayman sneered, "And every one said, the new one is the best." He came to a wide moor, where Mute Swans and their cygnets seemed to mock his ugliness. But at last, the little one cracked open its shell and, with a chirp, began its transformation into a beautiful swan. Arthur Rackham's enchanting drawing captures the moment of revelation, as the Ugly Duckling's true beauty was finally recognized. And John Hassall's playful illustration asks the question, "Can you lay eggs?" reminding us that even the most unassuming of creatures hold hidden wonders.
