Ulcerative colitis: A chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by the presence of ulcers and pus-filled sores in the large intestine, as depicted in these endoscopic views (C016 / 8310, 8312, 13, 18, and 8306). Samuel Wilks, a British physician, first described this condition in the late 19th century. The disease can affect the entire colon (pancolitis, C018 / 0928), causing abdominal pain, diarrhea, and weight loss. At the microscopic level, ulcerative colitis is marked by an inflammatory infiltrate, crypt architectural distortion, and glandular hypertrophy (SEM).
