The University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi, was the epicenter of a pivotal moment in American civil rights history. In 1962, James Meredith became the first Black student to enroll, sparking the Ole Miss Riot. White students, fueled by segregationist sentiments led by figures like Ross Barnett, rioted and waved Confederate flags. Civil rights lawyers Constance Baker Motley and Medgar Evers fought for Meredith's right to attend, leading to a standoff between students and the US military. This tumultuous time marked a turning point in the struggle for racial equality in the Deep South.
