Victorine Meurent: A Muse of Edouard Manet's Iconic Works Victorine Meurent, a prominent figure in the art world during the 19th century, played an essential role as a muse for renowned French painter Edouard Manet. Her captivating presence can be seen in some of his most famous works. In "Dejeuner sur l'Herbe, " painted in 1863, Victorine appears as one of the central figures. The oil on canvas masterpiece depicts her alongside two fully clothed men and another nude woman amidst a serene outdoor setting. This controversial piece challenged societal norms at the time and solidified Victorine's place in art history. Manet also created several studies featuring Victorine, such as "Study for Dejeuner sur L'Herbe. " Executed with pen, pencil, and watercolor on paper circa 1863, this study showcases his meticulous attention to detail while capturing her essence. Another iconic work that immortalized Victorine is "Olympia. " Painted between January and May 1867, this large plate artwork portrays her reclining provocatively on a bed while gazing directly at the viewer. It caused quite a scandal due to its bold depiction of female nudity and challenging conventional standards of beauty. The smaller version of "Olympia" was also completed by Manet in 1867. With subtle differences from its larger counterpart but equally powerful impact, it further highlights Victorine's ability to captivate audiences through her enigmatic presence. In addition to these notable pieces, we see Victorine featured in other works like "Young Lady in 1866" and "Mademoiselle V. . in the Costume of an Espada" from earlier years. These paintings showcase her versatility as she embodies different roles with grace and allure. Throughout their collaboration, Manet captured various facets of Victorine's personality - from sensuality to strength.
