"Captivating Melodies: A Glimpse into the World of Viole" Step back in time to 1926, where the enchanting sounds filled opera houses and theaters. In Paris, at the Opera Comique, a scene from La Joueur de Viole transported audiences to another realm. The delicate strings resonated with emotion as talented musicians brought this timeless tale to life. Across the Atlantic, in New York's Belmont Theatre, Americana showcased "The Student Prince of Denmark" scene. The haunting melodies echoed through the theater walls, captivating hearts and minds alike. It was a performance that left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to witness it. Travel even further back in history to c. 1170 when artists depicted musicians playing violes in intricate detail within the Hunterian Psalter. This pen and ink masterpiece on velum showcases not only their musical prowess but also their artistic skill. Fast forward a few centuries to c. 1570-80 when Loire workshop craftsmen wove tapestries depicting "The Concert at the Fountain. " Amongst these vibrant scenes were angelic figures gracefully strumming violes - a testament to both heavenly beauty and musical harmony. In stained glass artistry from various eras, angels are often portrayed playing this exquisite instrument. From St Cecilia surrounded by two angels in 1870s stained glass panels to an altarpiece predella panel showcasing angels serenading during Coronation of the Virgin ceremonies – each portrayal exudes ethereal charm. Even outside religious contexts, violes have been celebrated throughout history for their allure. An engraving titled "Femme jouant de la viole" captures a woman lost in her music during the seventeenth century while another engraving depicts an angel playing this beloved instrument as part of Surance's Stained Glass Project album number four.
