Warren Gamaliel Harding was the 29th President of the United States, serving from 1921 until his death in 1923. Known for his affable personality and handsome appearance, Harding's presidency was marred by scandal and corruption within his administration. Despite these controversies, he is also remembered for advocating for a return to "normalcy" after World War I. Harding's tenure as president saw the Teapot Dome scandal, in which government officials were found to have accepted bribes from oil companies in exchange for leasing federal land. The scandal tarnished Harding's reputation and cast a shadow over his legacy. Despite these challenges, Harding did make some notable achievements during his time in office. He signed the Fordney-McCumber Tariff Act into law, raising tariffs on imported goods to protect American industry. He also established the Bureau of Veterans Affairs to provide support for veterans returning from World War I. Harding passed away suddenly in 1923 while still in office, leaving Vice President Calvin Coolidge to assume the presidency. Though his presidency was marked by controversy and scandal, Warren G. Harding remains an intriguing figure in American history whose legacy continues to be debated among historians and political scholars.
