Washington Augustus Roebling (1883-1926) took over the reins from his father, John Augustus Roebling (1806-1869), in the construction of the Brooklyn Suspension Bridge in New York City during the late 19th century. In this bird's-eye view from Underwood & Underwood, Washington oversees the progress of the bridge, which would later become an engineering marvel and iconic symbol of the city. The Kilburn Brothers' image from one of the towers showcases the stunning view of Brooklyn from the bridge. Excelsior Stereoscopic Tours also captured the beauty and engineering prowess of the bridge during its construction. Washington's father, John, began the project in 1869, but it was Washington who saw it through to completion after John's untimely death. In this image, EF Farrington is seen testing the suspension bridge in 1883, ensuring its safety and durability for generations to come. Washington's dedication and vision transformed the Brooklyn Bridge into a symbol of progress and unity, connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan with an engineering feat that stands the test of time.
