William Charles: A Scottish Immigrant's Legacy in Art and History (1787-1856) Scotland-born artist and engraver William Charles left an indelible mark on both sides of the Atlantic. In Europe, he captured the theatrical world with his portraits of notable figures like Mr. Macready as Hamlet and Cardinal Wolsey. In America, he responded to the War of 1812 rumors with "A Scene on the Frontiers," denouncing the alleged scalp bounties. Back in Scotland, his memorial stands in St Brides Church, Fleet Street, City of London (1821), while his works adorned Victorian England, including Queen Victoria's portrait (1851) and her reading despatches (c1840s). Through his art, William Charles immortalized iconic scenes, such as The Union: Thistle, Rose, Shamrock (c1850), and The Gravel Pit (c1900). His timeless creations continue to inspire and captivate audiences, bridging the gap between history and art.
