Yermak Timofeyevich: The Cossack Conqueror of Siberia in the late 16th century. Known for his punitive raid against Khan Kuchum's forces in the second half of the 19th century, Yermak's legacy is immortalized in art and history. Mikhail Znamensky's "Ermak - Conqueror of Siberia" (1856) and Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin's "The Last Defeat of Khan Kuchum" (1891) depict Yermak's victories, while Alexei Gavrilovich Venetsianov's portrait (1818) showcases the legendary leader. However, Yermak's fate was sealed in 1584, as depicted in Boris Artemyevich Chorikov's "The Death of Yermak" (1836). Yermak's embassy at Tsar Ivan the Terrible's court is also captured in Chorikov's "Yermaks Embassy at the Tsar Ivan the Terrible" (1836). The Russian conquest of Siberia began in 1580, as shown in this map from 1689-1722. Yermak's bravery and determination marked the beginning of Russia's expansion into Eastern Siberia.
