Cattle, the gentle giants of the animal kingdom, have been a subject of fascination and tragedy throughout history. From idyllic scenes like Church Pool in Bettws-y-coed, where these magnificent creatures peacefully graze by the tranquil waters (depicted in an oil painting), to more unexpected encounters like In Val Trenta on the upper Isonzo, where only one lone cow remains standing amidst a stunning landscape (captured in a vibrant colour lithograph). Sometimes, their presence can lead to unforeseen calamities. On the Adria-Piove di Sacco line, chaos ensued when a littorina train collided with an ox that appeared out of nowhere (immortalized through another captivating colour lithograph). Similarly, between Lucca and Castelnuovo, an enraged cow tragically took a man's life before meeting its own demise under the wheels of an approaching train. Art has also depicted darker moments involving cattle. The Massacre of the Innocents showcases their unwitting involvement in human conflict (portrayed vividly in a haunting colour lithograph). A tragic escape or slip can turn fatal for both humans and bovines alike (represented through poignant colour lithographs). In Gleno di Montagna, Trentino, an old lady bravely intervened between two raging bulls - her act of bravery captured beautifully in yet another striking colour lithograph. And at an animal market filled with hundreds of oxen suddenly fleeing due to panic (again portrayed through dramatic colours), tragedy strikes as lives are lost unintentionally. Even beyond art's realm lies reality; aggressions persist at our East African colonies' borders as provocations continue against these innocent animals - highlighted powerfully by yet another thought-provoking colour lithograph. Yet amidst all this turmoil and sorrow surrounding cattle-human interactions lies hope and compassion. To save their masters from harm or danger is ingrained within these noble creatures' nature - showcased tenderly in a heartwarming colour lithograph.
