EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the 48th French Regiment of the Line embarking on board the English ship, "The St. Vincent," at Calais harbor in 1854. The French Expeditionary Force was making its way to the Baltic Sea to join the ongoing Crimean War against Russia. The troops are seen marching in formation towards the quay side, their uniforms and equipment neatly arranged. According to contemporary reports, upon arrival, they deposited their arms and accoutrements in boxes, which were then transported aboard the ships by smaller vessels. Large quantities of ammunition and powder were also embarked in the same manner. In the foreground of the photograph, soldiers can be seen boarding the ship through the lower ports, marking their first experience on board an English warship. The image offers a glimpse into the logistical challenges of mobilizing a large military force during wartime and the complexities of international alliances and cooperation. This photograph is a fascinating document of history, providing a visual record of a pivotal moment in the Crimean War and the complexities of military diplomacy during the 19th century. The exact creator of this image remains unknown, but it was originally published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1854.
