EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the aftermath of a daring yet perilous ballooning adventure that took place on the Thames Estuary in 1850. The title, 'Accident to the Nassau Balloon, between Gravesend and the Nore, Kent,' describes an incident involving two intrepid aeronauts, Mr. Charles Green and Mr. George Rush, who embarked on this journey for the purpose of testing improvements made to the newly-invented aneroid barometer by Mr. Rush. The photograph shows the damaged Nassau Balloon, a hot air balloon, lying on the sandy shore with the Thames Estuary in the background. The men, having lost control of their vessel, were carried downstream at a rapid pace after making their experiments. The balloon eventually struck the water about two miles north of Sheerness, causing both men to be drawn through the river. The crew of the nearby cutter attempted to secure the balloon by firing musketry into it, allowing the gas to escape and enabling them to finally capture it. However, Mr. Green sustained severe injuries to his head and face during the incident. This evocative image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, provides a glimpse into the thrilling yet dangerous world of 19th-century ballooning and the spirit of innovation that drove men to explore new heights and technologies. The photograph is a testament to the risks and challenges faced by these early aviators and the determination to push the boundaries of human endeavor.
