A Symbol of Diplomatic Harmony: Admiral King's Visit to the King of Siam at Bangkok, Procession of Boats up the River (1865)
In this engraving, we witness a momentous occasion in which Vice-Admiral King, Commander-in-Chief of our squadron on the China station, pays a visit to the Court of Bangkok. The year is 1865 and tensions between East and West are beginning to ease. As Admiral King's procession makes its way up the river, we see a sea of boats carrying dignitaries from both sides in a display of respect and goodwill.
The city of Bangkok, situated on the banks of the Chow Phya or Meinam River, is home to over 350,000 inhabitants - a melting pot of Siamese, Chinese, and Burmese cultures. The town's unique floating nature means that boats are an integral part of daily life here. Not a single carriage was spotted during Admiral King's nine-day visit.
This historic moment marks the strengthening ties between Siam (now Thailand) and Great Britain, as they work together to foster trade and understanding. As we gaze upon this engraving, we are reminded of the power of diplomacy in bringing nations closer together.
