Agricultural Exhibition at Roorkee, North-West Provinces of India: general view, 1864. Creator: Unknown
Agricultural Exhibition at Roorkee, North-West Provinces of India: general view, 1864. Engraving of a photograph by Mr. James Freeman, of...the entrance to the showyard from the high road outside...There were some beautiful horses from every district of Upper India, various species of oxen and cows, a two-humped camel, some elks, and even a tiger cat, which could hardly be reckoned among the domestic animals. The show of sheep and poultry was not very good. In the department of machinery there were chaff-cutting machines, seed-crushers, and cotton-gins, a large hydraulic cotton-press, and several machines for raising water, fixed beside the canal adjoining the showyard. As Roorkee is situated on the road to the great fair of Hurdwar, frequented by many thousands of the Hindoos at that season, the number of visitors to the exhibition was very great'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the Agricultural Exhibition at Roorkee, North-West Provinces of India in 1864. The image, originally an engraving of a photograph by Mr. James Freeman, showcases the bustling showyard filled with a diverse array of animals and machinery.
From beautiful horses to various species of oxen and cows, even including a two-humped camel and a tiger cat, this exhibition was truly a sight to behold. Despite the lackluster showing in sheep and poultry, the department of machinery shone brightly with chaff-cutting machines, seed-crushers, cotton-gins, and more on display.
Situated on the road to the great fair of Hurdwar, which drew thousands of Hindus each season, Roorkee saw an influx of visitors eager to witness this impressive showcase. The image provides us with a glimpse into a time when agriculture was at the forefront of society in India's North-West Provinces.
As we admire this historical snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded of the importance placed on agricultural innovation and livestock breeding during that era. This print serves as both a visual delight and a valuable piece of history for us to appreciate today.
