The Akali of the Sikhs - from a drawing by Marshall Claxton, 1857. Creator: Unknown

The Akali of the Sikhs - from a drawing by Marshall Claxton, 1857. The important services which the Sikh regiments have rendered our army in India up to the present time invests with peculiar interest the above portrait of their Akali (or Chief), engraved from a Sketch by Marshall Claxton. This interest is increased by the rumour of incipient disaffection in several of the Sikh regiments, owing, it is said, to General Wilson's regulations relative to the plunder of the city of Delhi. The Sikhs, from the time of their great Chief Runjeet Singh downwards, have played an important part in the history of British India; and, from all accounts, are not by any means the barbarous fanatics of former days'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts The Akali of the Sikhs, the revered chief of the Nihang Sikh warriors, as rendered in a drawing by Marshall Claxton in 1857. The portrait, engraved from Claxton's sketch, holds significant interest due to the vital contributions of the Sikh regiments to the British army in India up to that time. The Akali's image is further intriguing amidst rumors of unrest in several Sikh regiments, reportedly due to General Wilson's regulations concerning the plunder of Delhi. The Sikhs have played a pivotal role in the history of British India since the time of their great leader, Runjeet Singh. They are far from the barbarous fanatics of earlier days, as reported in the 'Illustrated London News' in 1857. The Akali is depicted here wearing a turban and a long beard, adorned with jewelry, and armed with a kirpan (a short sword) and a pair of karams (curved daggers). His headgear is embellished with metal bracelets and a kara (steel bracelet), reflecting his warrior status. The print captures the essence of the Sikh culture, religion, and their martial traditions. The intricate wood engraving showcases the meticulous attention to detail, highlighting the Akali's facial features, head dress, and weaponry. The image is a testament to the rich history and heritage of the Sikhs in India during the British Raj.
