Alberich, from The Savoy No. 8, 1896. Creator: Aubrey Beardsley
Alberich, from The Savoy No. 8, 1896. Another drawing for Das Rheingold. It has the charm of a Japanese netsuke and reminds one of an earlier drawing, The Glutton in Hell...To this consummate skill was added an imagination hitherto unknown and undreamt of in the staid, prosperous and smug later nineteenth century. Demon-ridden it may be, but we have to go back to Hieronymus Bosch to find anything comparable...Over a blank white paper come a smirking, creeping, posturing devil horde of things, groteque, weird, macabre, sinister, misgiving and alarming... Published in " The Best of Beardsley" edited by R. A. Walker, [The Bodley Head, London, 1948]

Alberich, from The Savoy No. 8,1896 - A Demon-Ridden Masterpiece
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases the extraordinary talent of Aubrey Beardsley and his groundbreaking work in the late nineteenth century. Titled "Alberich" this drawing was created for Das Rheingold and featured in The Savoy No. 8. Beardsley's artistic prowess is evident as he seamlessly blends elements of Japanese netsuke with a touch of Hieronymus Bosch's macabre style. With consummate skill, he transports us to a realm where grotesque devilish creatures come alive on a blank white canvas. The image exudes an eerie charm that captivates viewers while simultaneously evoking feelings of misgiving and alarm. Alberich's clenched fist and furious hand gestures reflect his anger and rage, making him a formidable character within the illustration. In this piece, Beardsley defies convention by infusing decadent movement into his graphic design. His imagination knows no bounds as he introduces mythical beasts and creatures into the scene, adding depth to the narrative. Published in "The Best of Beardsley" edited by R. A Walker in 1948, this artwork stands as a testament to Beardsley's unique vision during an era characterized by staidness and conformity. With its intricate details and powerful symbolism, "Alberich" remains an enduring masterpiece that continues to mesmerize art enthusiasts worldwide.
