All A-Blowing! All A-Growing!, 1850. Creator: Edmund Evans
All A-Blowing! All A-Growing!, 1850. Illustration to "Spring-Time in London", a story by Thomas Miller. "All a-blowing! all a-growing!" are the first sounds with which the spring flowers are ushered into the streets of London; and although not uttered by the lips of such fabled nymphs as the poets of old clothed in the richest hues of their imagination, and sent forth as attendants on blossom-bearing Spring, the voices still come like gentle greetings from old friends, all the sweeter through having been so long absent. Sometimes we see a pretty face, looking out through the homely bonnet, and behold a light and graceful form, and hear a clear musical voice calling out "Sweet primroses!" From "Illustrated London News", 1850

All A-Blowing! All A-Growing!" is a captivating 19th century print by renowned English illustrator Edmund Evans. This enchanting image is an illustration to Thomas Miller's story "Spring-Time in London," which was published in the Illustrated London News in 1850. The scene portrays a bustling flower market in London, where the first signs of spring are in full bloom. A donkey cart, pulled by a patient ass, is laden with various pots of vibrant flowers and plants. The driver, a man in a hat and coat, is assisted by a woman in a bonnet, both of whom are eagerly selling their wares to delighted customers. The print beautifully captures the essence of the season, with the sounds of "All a-blowing! all a-growing!" echoing through the streets as the first flowers of spring are ushered in. The gentle greetings from the sellers add to the warmth and charm of the scene, making it a delightful representation of the Victorian era. The print showcases the rich detail and skillful engraving of Edmund Evans, who expertly captures the textures and forms of the flowers, the expressions of the sellers, and the lively energy of the market. The image is a testament to the beauty and allure of nature, as well as the thriving trade and transportation systems of the time. Overall, "All A-Blowing! All A-Growing!" is a charming and evocative snapshot of spring in 19th century London, and a beautiful example of the illustrative work of Edmund Evans.
