ALSRC, Apollo Lunar Sample Return Container, Apollo 11, 1969. Creator: Union Carbide
The Apollo Lunar Sample Return Container (ALSRC) was an aluminum box with a triple seal manufactured by the Nuclear Division of Union Carbide. It was used on Apollo lunar landing missions to preserve a lunar-like vacuum around the samples and protect them from the shock environment of the return flight to earth. An aluminum mesh liner helped absorb impacts. Prior to flight, each box was loaded with sample container bags and other sample containment devices. The " rock box" was then closed under vacuum so that it would not contain pressure greater than the lunar ambient pressure. On the moon, while samples were being loaded, the seals were protected by a Teflon film and a cloth cover which were removed just prior to closing the box. Two ALSRCs were used on each mission. This ALSRC was used in July 1969 during Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing mission, by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. T

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the ALSRC, or Apollo Lunar Sample Return Container, used during the historic Apollo 11 mission in July 1969. Created by Union Carbide's Nuclear Division, this aluminum box played a crucial role in preserving the integrity of lunar samples and protecting them from the harsh conditions of space travel. The ALSRC was designed with a triple seal and an aluminum mesh liner to absorb impacts during transportation. Prior to flight, it was loaded with sample container bags and other containment devices. To ensure a lunar-like vacuum around the samples, the box was closed under vacuum pressure so that it matched the ambient pressure on the moon. During their time on the moon's surface, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin carefully loaded samples into this rock-solid container. The seals were safeguarded by a Teflon film and cloth cover until just before closing it shut. This particular ALSRC holds immense historical significance as it accompanied Armstrong and Aldrin on their monumental journey back to Earth after becoming the first humans to set foot on another celestial body. Its presence serves as a tangible reminder of humanity's remarkable achievement in exploring outer space. Preserved through time, this print allows us to marvel at both its engineering prowess and its connection to one of mankind's greatest accomplishments – landing on the moon during Apollo 11.
