EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 16th century altarpiece wing, titled "Altarpiece Wing with the Circumcision," is an anonymous masterpiece from the Low Countries, likely created in the Netherlands around 1570. The exterior of the panel showcases two significant biblical figures: John the Baptist and the Lamb of God. John the Baptist, depicted as an older man with a long beard and wearing a camel's hair mantle and leather belt, points towards the Lamb of God, who is shown as a lamb standing between two angels. This iconography represents the Christ Antiphonetes, or the "Word made Flesh," a concept central to Christian theology. The inner scene of the altarpiece depicts the Circumcision of Christ, an essential event in the Life of Christ according to the New Testament. In this scene, Jesus, as an infant, lies on a bed while Joseph holds him down for the circumcision. The circumciser, Simeon, performs the operation, while Mary looks on in concern. This oil on panel painting, with its rich colors and intricate details, is a testament to the artistic heritage of the Netherlands during the sixteenth century. It is currently on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, inviting visitors to explore the biblical scene and the cultural significance of this historic artwork.
