American Aloe in Bloom in the Gardens of the Royal Botanic Society, Regent's Park, 1858. Creator: Unknown
American Aloe in Bloom in the Gardens of the Royal Botanic Society, Regent's Park, [London], 1858....a rare spectacle in our clime...[the plant] is supposed to be now about one hundred and twenty years old. Its height may be about ten or twelve feet, with a foliage by no means luxuriant...On the 12tn of June the flower-spike made its first appearance, and then grew very rapidly, and the whole now presents much of the form of a candelabrum, bearing flowers to the extent of about 3500. The first portion expanded about the 8th of September...Agave Americana, or the American aloe, is a plant which, when full grown, has a short, cylindrical, woody stem, which is terminated by hard, fleshy, spiny, sharp-pointed, bluish-green leaves, about six feet long, and altogether resembling those of the arborescent aloes...Having acquired its full growth, it finally produces its gigantic flower-stem, after which it perishes. This stem sometimes is as much as forty feet high, and is surrounded with a multitude of branches arranged in a pyramidal form, with perfect symmetry, and having on their points clusters of greenish-yellow flowers, which continue to be produced for two or three months in succession'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the American Aloe in Bloom, a rare sight in the Gardens of the Royal Botanic Society in Regent's Park, London, during the year 1858. The American Aloe, also known as Agave Americana or the American aloe, is a fascinating plant that has graced the gardens for approximately one hundred and twenty years. With a height of about ten to twelve feet, its foliage, though not particularly luxuriant, is a striking contrast to the plant's impressive stature. The first bloom of this magnificent plant was observed on the 12th of June, and it grew rapidly thereafter. By the 8th of September, the flower-spike had fully expanded, presenting the form of a grand candelabrum adorned with approximately 3500 flowers. The American Aloe is a unique plant, characterized by its short, cylindrical, woody stem, which is terminated by hard, fleshy, spiny, sharp-pointed, bluish-green leaves. These leaves, reminiscent of those found in arborescent aloes, can grow up to six feet long. Once the American Aloe has reached its full growth, it produces a gigantic flower-stem, which can reach heights of up to forty feet. Surrounded by a multitude of branches arranged in a perfect pyramidal form, this stem bears clusters of greenish-yellow flowers, which continue to be produced for two or three months in succession. After the bloom, the plant perishes, leaving behind a testament to its grandeur. This photograph, taken in 1858, offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the beauty and wonder of the American Aloe in its prime. The image, published in the Illustrated London News, captures the essence of this remarkable plant, a true spectacle in our clime.
