EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print, created by Gustave Doré in the late 19th century, we are transported into the mythical world of Dante Alighieri's "The Divine Comedy". The image depicts a pivotal moment as an old man approaches us in a bark. This old man is none other than Charon, the ferryman of the dead. Doré's intricate engraving skillfully captures the essence of this iconic scene from "The Vision of Hell" (Inferno), where Dante embarks on his imaginary journey through Hell, Purgatory, and finally to Heaven. As we gaze at this print, we can almost feel ourselves being drawn into Dante's epic narrative. Charon stands tall and formidable in his boat, rowing effortlessly across the mysterious River Styx. His weathered face reveals centuries' worth of wisdom and experience as he guides lost souls towards their final destination. The attention to detail in Doré's work is remarkable; every line etched with precision brings life to Charon and transports us deeper into Dante's vivid imagination. This particular edition of "The Divine Comedy" published in the late 19th century by Cassell Petter & Galpin, showcases Doré's masterful illustrations that have become synonymous with this timeless literary masterpiece. Through his artistry, Doré has immortalized these characters and moments from Dante Alighieri’s poetic journey for generations to come.
