The Annunciation, c. 1503-1505. Creator: Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471-1528)
The Annunciation, c. 1503-1505. These eight woodcuts (1959.99.8-15) progress from Gabriels announcement to Mary that she would bear the Son of God, to the events of her early motherhood and beyond. This included the joy of sharing her pregnancy with her cousin Elizabeth, Jesuss birth, and the subsequent arrival of the magi. After Jesuss circumcision and presentation at the temple the Holy Family fled to Egypt to avoid Herod and stayed there for several years. The seemingly out of place last scene shows a glimpse of their daily life in Egypt as Joseph continues his carpentry and Mary spins wool. The Holy Family is surrounded by angels and helpful putti and are blessed by God the Father and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove overhead

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Albrecht Dürer's masterpiece, "The Annunciation" created between 1503 and 1505. The woodcut series, consisting of eight prints, beautifully depicts the significant events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ. Starting with Gabriel's divine announcement to Mary about her role in bearing the Son of God, the progression takes us through Mary's pregnancy shared joyfully with her cousin Elizabeth, Jesus' birth, and the arrival of the magi. Moving forward in time, we witness Jesus' circumcision and presentation at the temple before witnessing an unexpected scene depicting their daily life in Egypt. Joseph diligently continues his carpentry work while Mary skillfully spins wool. Surrounding them are angels and helpful putti who provide divine assistance. The Holy Family is blessed by both God the Father and the Holy Spirit represented as a dove hovering above them. This powerful image captures not only their physical journey but also their spiritual significance during this crucial period. Albrecht Dürer's attention to detail and mastery of woodcut technique shine through each print within this series. As one explores these scenes from early 16th-century Germany, it becomes evident that they were crafted with great reverence for religious themes prevalent during Renaissance art. Preserved by The Cleveland Museum of Art, this remarkable piece offers viewers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in Christian history while showcasing Dürer's artistic brilliance.
