Anti-Papal Demonstration at Salisbury, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Anti-Papal Demonstration at Salisbury, 1850....the sober, peaceful, and respectable city of Salisbury [in Wiltshire] was frightened from the propriety of its stagnation by a grand mock procession of the Pope, his English Cardinal, and the twelve Bishops, all of whom were afterwards doomed to the flames...we believe no member of the Church of England professedly took part in the display. The procession was...attended by a large number of torch-bearers, many of whom were dressed in frocks and cowls...and wore large comic masks...When the Guys, as the mob irreverently termed these splendid figures, had passed through the greater part of the town, they were carried to a scaffold erected in the Green-croft...and there committed to the flames, with fireworks and the usual accompaniments...we believe no mischief was done, even to the extent of a pane of glass'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative engraving captures the Anti-Papal Demonstration that took place in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, in 1850. The scene depicts a mock procession of an effigy of the Pope, an English Cardinal, and twelve Bishops, all doomed to be burned at the stake. The sober, peaceful, and respectable city of Salisbury was momentarily disturbed by this grand display of anti-Catholic sentiment. No member of the Church of England reportedly participated in the demonstration. The procession was attended by a large number of torch-bearers, many of whom were dressed in frocks and cowls, mimicking the attire of Catholic clergy, and wore large comic masks. When the 'Guys,' as the mob irreverently termed these effigies, had passed through the greater part of the town, they were carried to a scaffold erected in the Green-croft, a public space near the market cross. There, they were committed to the flames, accompanied by fireworks and the usual celebratory noise. This engraving is from the Illustrated London News, a prominent 19th-century British newspaper, and provides a glimpse into the patriotic fervor and religious tensions of the time. The image is reminiscent of medieval processions and the burning of heretics during the Middle Ages. The scene is captured in exquisite detail, with the market cross and other buildings in the background adding to the authenticity of the image. The use of flaming torches and fireworks further intensifies the dramatic effect of the demonstration.
