The Apocalypse: The Angel Shows St. John the New Jerusalem, 1546-1556. Creator: Jean Duvet (French
The Apocalypse: The Angel Shows St. John the New Jerusalem, 1546-1556. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

The Apocalypse - The Angel Shows St. John the New Jerusalem, 1546-1556
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases Jean Duvet's extraordinary artistic talent and his unique style. This particular print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the narrative of the Apocalypse, derived from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. Duvet dedicated several years to creating this series of 23 engravings, which are considered to be his greatest artistic achievement. Only seven complete sets are known to exist, making this museum's volume an incredibly rare treasure. As one of France's first major printmakers and one of the most original artists during the 1500s, Duvet was heavily influenced by Italian art through circulating prints like those by Marcantonio Raimondi. His human figures exhibit solid modeling reminiscent of the Italian High Renaissance. However, what truly sets Duvet apart is his idiosyncratic and highly artificial style. He defies rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns, resulting in crowded compositions that mesmerize viewers with their intricate details. This print captures not only Duvet's technical mastery but also his ability to convey profound religious themes through visual storytelling. It serves as a testament to his enduring legacy as an innovative artist who pushed boundaries and left an indelible mark on French art history.
