The Apocalypse: Babylon the Harlot, Seated on the Seven-headed Beast, 1546-1556. Creator

The Apocalypse: Babylon the Harlot, Seated on the Seven-headed Beast, 1546-1556. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

The Apocalypse - Babylon the Harlot, Seated on the Seven-headed Beast

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that transports viewers into the mystical world of Jean Duvet's imagination. Created between 1546 and 1556, this artwork is part of a bound volume illustrating the narrative of the Apocalypse from the Book of Revelation. Duvet's mastery as a printmaker shines through in this series of engravings, which took him several years to complete. Considered his greatest artistic achievement, these prints are highly sought after by collectors and art enthusiasts alike. The museum's volume containing all 23 engravings is one of only seven known complete sets in existence. Hailing from France, Duvet was an influential figure in the art scene during the 16th century. While primarily based in Langres, he drew inspiration from Italian art through circulating prints by artists like Marcantonio Raimondi. This influence can be seen in his solidly modeled human figures reminiscent of the Italian High Renaissance. However, what truly sets Duvet apart is his unique style characterized by crowded compositions and ornamental surface patterns that defy rational space. "The Apocalypse: Babylon the Harlot, Seated on the Seven-headed Beast" exemplifies this idiosyncratic approach with its mesmerizing details and intricate design. This remarkable print allows us to appreciate Duvet's artistic genius and immerse ourselves in a world where biblical prophecies come to life through vivid imagery.
