The Apocalypse: Duvet Studying the Apocalypse, 1555. Creator: Jean Duvet (French, 1485-1561)
The Apocalypse: Duvet Studying the Apocalypse, 1555. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the extraordinary talent of Jean Duvet, a renowned French artist from the 16th century. This print forms part of a bound volume featuring an enthralling narrative inspired by the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. Jean Duvet dedicated several years to creating this series of engravings, which are considered his greatest artistic accomplishment. The meticulous attention to detail and intricate compositions displayed in these works exemplify his unique style and creativity. Duvet's exposure to Italian art through circulated prints, particularly those by Marcantonio Raimondi, influenced his work significantly. His mastery in depicting solidly modeled human figures reflects elements of the Italian High Renaissance while maintaining his distinctive touch. What sets Duvet apart is his idiosyncratic and highly artificial style characterized by crowded compositions that disregard rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns. This approach adds depth and complexity to each engraving within this series. This print captures not only the beauty and intricacy of Jean Duvet's artwork but also its historical significance as one of France's earliest major printmakers. It serves as a testament to his innovative spirit and enduring legacy within the art world.
