The Apocalypse: St. John Sees Seven Golden Candlesticks, 1546-1556. Creator: Jean Duvet (French
The Apocalypse: St. John Sees Seven Golden Candlesticks, 1546-1556. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the exceptional talent of French artist Jean Duvet. This artwork is part of a bound volume featuring illustrations depicting the narrative of the Apocalypse, as described in the Revelation of Saint John from the Bible. Duvet dedicated several years to creating this series, which comprises 23 engravings and stands as his greatest artistic accomplishment. Only seven complete sets are known to exist, making this particular print an incredibly rare find within museum collections. As one of France's pioneering printmakers during the 16th century, Duvet was renowned for his originality and creativity. Although primarily based in Langres, he drew inspiration from Italian art through circulated prints by artists like Marcantonio Raimondi. The influence of the Italian High Renaissance can be seen in Duvet's skillful depiction of solidly modeled human figures.
