The arrival of the Prince of Wales in Plymouth Harbour - H.M.S. "Impregnable" firing a salute, 1860. The future King Edward VII returns from a tour of North America. On his Royal Highness landing at the Victualling Yard he was received by the chief officers of that establishment, a guard of honour composed of a detachment of the 12th Regiment and the 3rd Devon battalion of Rifle Volunteers, lining the steps. A large number of ladies and gentlemen were also present, among whom were the Countess of Mount Edgcumbe and Lady Ernestine Edgcumbe. The Prince then proceeded in General Hutchinson's carriage to the railway station, where a guard of honour of detachments of the Royal Marine Light Infantry and the 61st Regiment, and the Royal Marine band, were drawn up. On his arrival on the platform the Mayors of Plymouth and Devonport presented addresses, which were most graciously received. A special train was got out, and a few minutes after twelve o'clock his Royal Highness and suite left in a Royal saloon carriage for Windsor. At the Victualling Yard, along the Prince's route to the railway station, and at the station, the large crowds assembled warmly greeted his Royal Highness on his safe return'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment when the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, arrives in Plymouth Harbour in 1860, aboard H.M.S. Impregnable. The Prince had just completed a tour of North America and was warmly welcomed back to England. Upon his arrival at the Victualling Yard, he was greeted by a guard of honor composed of the 12th Regiment and the 3rd Devon battalion of Rifle Volunteers, as well as local dignitaries and a large crowd of excited onlookers. The Impregnable, a formidable ironclad warship of the Royal Navy, salutes the Prince with a grand display of cannon fire, adding to the grandeur of the occasion. The Prince then proceeded to the railway station, where he was presented with addresses by the Mayors of Plymouth and Devonport before departing for Windsor. The photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the pomp and ceremony of a Royal arrival in the late Victorian era.
