EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Asian man and woman" by Nikolai Nikolaevich Petrov, dates back to the early 20th century and is part of a collection of 71 items, including photographs and negatives on glass, created by the revolutionary-populist and social and political activist N.A. Charushin and N. Petrov. Charushin began serving a hard labor sentence in the Transbaikal Territory in 1878, and the materials in the collection offer a unique insight into the history of the region during this period, with a particular emphasis on the tea trade with China, which was a significant economic branch at the time. The image depicts a double portrait of an Asian man and woman, both dressed in traditional clothing, standing in front of a plain backdrop. The man wears a long robe with wide sleeves, and his hair is styled in a topknot. The woman, wearing a long, flowing dress with intricate patterns, has her hair pulled back into a bun. Their serious expressions and the formal setting suggest a formal occasion or a significant meeting. The photograph offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Asia during the early 20th century, providing a window into the lives of people from different ethnicities and nationalities. The image is a testament to the meeting of frontiers and the complex interplay of cultures and traditions that characterized this period in history. The photograph is a stunning example of the art of studio portraiture and the power of photography to capture a moment in time, preserving it for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
