The Australian Twin Steamer "Bunyip", 1858. Our Engraving represents one of a class of vessels now becoming general on the Murray and other rivers in South Australia. The Bunyip is a now craft lately placed on the station for the conveyance of both passengers and merchandise between Adelaide and the neighbouring places, and is giving the greatest satisfaction by her performances. She consists of two vessels of narrow beam, but extremely sharp in build, with a large paddle-wheel between them, the flooring connecting the vessel giving, with them, a great width of beam; and a good rate of speed has been arrived at. A vessel of similar construction, named the Gemini, was tried on the Thames some years since with but little success, though a comfortable and excellent passenger-boat. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Australian Twin Steamer "Bunyip," built in 1858, a remarkable vessel that graced the waters of South Australia's rivers. The creator of this image remains unknown, but the description of the Bunyip was published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1858. The Bunyip was a twin-steamer, featuring two narrow-beamed vessels with sharp builds and a large paddle-wheel situated between them. The flooring connecting the vessels provided a generous width of beam, enabling the Bunyip to achieve a commendable rate of speed. The Bunyip was designed for the transportation of both passengers and merchandise between Adelaide and neighboring areas, offering a significant improvement in travel and commerce. The design of the Bunyip was innovative for its time, as a similar vessel named the Gemini had been attempted on the Thames with limited success a few years prior. The Bunyip, however, proved to be a comfortable and effective passenger-boat, revolutionizing river transportation in South Australia. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the ingenuity and progress of the maritime industry during the late 19th century.
