Bacchus and Ariadne, 1808-1811. Creator: Henry Bone (British, 1755-1834)

Bacchus and Ariadne, 1808-1811. Henry Bone devoted three years of his life to creating this work, a tremendous technical achievement and the largest enamel that had ever been made. The painstaking process requires each application of colour to be fired at a different temperature. The enamel is after Titians famous Bacchus and Ariadne, an early 16th-century Italian masterpiece. Bone had the lavishly carved, gilt wood frame designed specially for the work, indicating the cultural value placed on great enamel reproductions of a famous painting. Bone was unable to show this enamel at the annual Royal Academy exhibition because the Prince of Wales asked to see it. When the prince decided not to purchase it, Bone issued tickets for visitors to come see the work in his studio. More than 4, 000 people went to see the enamel before it was purchased by a collector

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Henry Bone's remarkable achievement, "Bacchus and Ariadne" created between 1808 and 1811. Devoting three years of his life to this masterpiece, Bone achieved a tremendous technical feat by producing the largest enamel ever made at that time. The painstaking process involved firing each application of color at different temperatures. Inspired by Titian's renowned Italian masterpiece from the early 16th century, Bone meticulously reproduced the iconic "Bacchus and Ariadne" in enamel form. To emphasize its cultural significance, he commissioned a lavishly carved gilt wood frame specifically designed for this work. Interestingly, due to an unexpected turn of events, Bone was unable to exhibit his enamel at the prestigious Royal Academy exhibition as planned. The Prince of Wales expressed interest in viewing it personally but ultimately decided against purchasing it. Undeterred by this setback, Bone ingeniously issued tickets for visitors to come see the artwork in his studio instead. The response was overwhelming; over 4,000 people flocked to witness this extraordinary creation before it found its rightful place with a collector. This enchanting print not only captures Bone's artistic prowess but also highlights the enduring appeal and value placed on exquisite enamel reproductions of famous paintings like Titian's "Bacchus and Ariadne.
