EDITORS COMMENTS
The Last Banquet of Alboin, (c570AD), 1890. This print captures a haunting scene from history. Depicting the final feast of Alboin, king of the Lombards, held in Verona during the 6th century. The image showcases a moment that would forever change the course of events. In this chilling tableau, we witness Alboin's cruel act as he forces his wife Rosamund to drink from a cup made out of her own father's skull. The shocking insult ignites an unyielding determination within Queen Rosamund to seek revenge for her slain father. The engraving exudes an air of melancholy and tension as it transports us back to this pivotal event in medieval times. The composition is filled with intricate details - from the regal furniture and majestic crown adorning Alboin's head to the kneeling figures surrounding him. The unknown creator masterfully captures both the inner turmoil and stoic resolve etched on each character's face. It serves as a powerful reminder of how art can bring historical narratives to life. This thought-provoking print is sourced from 'Cassells Illustrated Universal History' by Edmund Ollier, published in 1890. Its monochrome aesthetic adds depth and intensity to this gripping tale of power, betrayal, and vengeance.
