EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th century folio, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, India, showcases a chaotic battle scene from the epic Ramayana, a foundational text in Hinduism and one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India. The Adventures of Rama, as the Ramayana is also known, recounts the journey of Prince Rama and his allies as they seek to rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana. In this image, a panoramic view of a city under siege unfolds, with rooftops and buildings ablaze in the background. The foreground is filled with a colorful and intense battle scene, as men clash with swords, bows, and tridents. The scene is a testament to the concept of dharma, or duty, that permeates the Ramayana, as warriors engage in violent conflict to uphold righteousness and protect the innocent. The folio, created using ink and opaque watercolor on paper, is a masterpiece of 16th or 17th century Indian art. The intricate details, from the individual expressions on the faces of the warriors to the ornate patterns adorning their armor, demonstrate the skill and artistry of the unknown artist. The folio's letterbox format and the use of red ink for the outlines and details add to its visual appeal. Originally from Lucknow, this folio is now part of the esteemed collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Its presence in the museum's holdings serves as a reminder of the rich artistic and literary heritage of South East Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
