This stunning folio from a 17th century Shahnama, or Book of Kings, showcases the epic battle scene on the recto and the poetic text on the verso. The recto illustrates a thrilling moment from the epic poem by Abul Qasim Firdawsī, known as Firdawsī Abū l-Qāsim Mansūr in Persian literature. The scene depicts a fierce battle between the armies of Abu'l-Aswad Anushirvan, the just and wise king of Iran, and the invading forces of the Hindu king, Indra. The combatants engage in hand-to-hand combat, with one warrior falling from his horse after being struck by an arrow, while another man chases his opponent on foot, brandishing a blade. The animals, including horses and elephants, add to the chaos and intensity of the battle. The verso of the folio is adorned with opaque watercolor, gold, and silver on paper, featuring the Persian text of the poem. The text describes the valor and heroism of the Persian monarch and his troops, as they defend their land against the invading forces.
