The Battle on the Volturno - battery where the Neapolitans burnt the wounded Garibaldians... 1860. Creator: Unknown
The Battle on the Volturno - battery where the Neapolitans burnt the wounded Garibaldians - from a sketch by T. Nast, 1860. War in Italy: scene showing...a deed of abominable cruelty on the part of the Neapolitans...[who] piled up the dead and wounded; and if a poor fellow had strength to crawl out he was pushed back by the Neapolitan bayonets. There seems little doubt that the fight was marked by great ferocity...there is no end to the complaints of our soldiers that the Neapolitans killed our wounded. Several of them were found half burnt. Although we are no longer in Sicily, burning and plunder seem to be still the order of the day of the Neapolitan soldatesco. Not a farm building remains in the neighbourhood of Capua, and as the columns on Tuesday came down from the hills to Caserta they set fire to every village which lay on their road'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the aftermath of the Battle on the Volturno, which took place in Italy in 1860 during the Expedition of the Thousand led by Giuseppe Garibaldi to unify Italy. The scene depicts a battery where Neapolitan soldiers are shown mercilessly piling up the wounded Garibaldian soldiers and setting them on fire. The deed of abominable cruelty is described in vivid detail in an article from the Illustrated London News published in 1860. The article reports that the Neapolitans showed little regard for the Geneva Cross, which signified the protection of the wounded, and that several wounded soldiers were found half burnt. The article also mentions that the Neapolitan soldiers had a reputation for burning and plundering, and that entire farm buildings in the vicinity of Capua had been destroyed. The ferocity of the battle is further emphasized by the complaints of Garibaldian soldiers that their wounded were being killed. This image serves as a stark reminder of the brutal realities of war and the disregard for human life and dignity during this period in Italian history.
