Bear-hunting in Sweden, 1856. Creator: Unknown
Bear-hunting in Sweden, 1856....a small sortie is organised by the inhabitants, who collect together...all those who are willing to share the fatigues of the chase. The hunting gear generally consists of a rifle, knife, and a pole of moderate length, which latter is useful in two ways: first, to steer and push along with when wearing the tremendous snow-shoes; and, secondly, at a pinch it serves to stave off a wounded beast from getting within "hugging" distance. A sledge or two accompany the hunters as far as practicable, to carry provisions and stores of any kind that might be required; and, after the parting glass "for luck"...they start off. [The kill] is generally decided by the bullet; but sometimes the bear shows fight to the last, and can only be dispatched at close quarters with the knife. Dogs are of little use, except to indicate the retreat of the game, for which purpose they are taken'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
Bear-hunting in Sweden, 1856: A Traditional Community Hunt This image transports us back in time to the winter landscape of Sweden, 1856, where a small but determined group of hunters embark on a bear hunt. The community, united by the shared excitement and anticipation of the chase, gathers together all those willing to brave the elements and participate. Their hunting gear is simple yet effective: a rifle for the kill, a knife for the final confrontation, and a pole to aid their progress through the deep snow. The pole, a crucial tool, serves dual purposes: it assists in navigating the snow-shoes, and at close range, it can be used as a makeshift shield against a wounded bear. Two sledges accompany the hunters, carrying provisions and essential supplies. After a heartfelt 'for luck' toast, the group sets off, their spirits high and their determination unwavering. The outcome of the hunt is often decided by the bullet, but the bear, in its final moments, may show fierce resistance, necessitating a close-quarters confrontation with the hunter's knife. The role of the dogs in this hunt is minimal, primarily used to signal the bear's retreat. This photograph, taken from the pages of the 'Illustrated London News' in 1856, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the camaraderie, courage, and tradition of bear hunting in Sweden during this era.
