The Bishop of Bath and Wells (Lord Auckland) preaching the Thanks-Giving Sermon, in Westminster Abbe Creator: Unknown
The Bishop of Bath and Wells (Lord Auckland) preaching the Thanks-Giving Sermon, in Westminster Abbey, before the House of Peers, on Sunday last, 1856. Church service in London attended by members of the Houses of Parliament. The whole of the official staff of the House, comprising the librarian, the keeper of the papers, &c. the various ushers and messengers, were present; and, although the number of peers was not great, the procession was sufficiently full. There was a large choir, and full cathedral service was chanted...so great was the crowd, and so very ill-adapted for hearing is the part of the Abbey appropriated for the accommodation of the major part of the congregation, that little if any part of the discourse reached those who were not in the immediate vicinity of the preacher'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures the reverence and grandeur of a Thanks-Giving Sermon delivered by the Bishop of Bath and Wells, Lord Auckland, within the hallowed walls of Westminster Abbey. The year was 1856, and the occasion was graced by the presence of members of the House of Peers, adding an air of importance and solemnity to the event. The image, published in the Illustrated London News, reveals a full cathedral service in progress, with a large choir in attendance. Despite the presence of the official staff of the House and a sizable congregation, the acoustics of the Abbey proved challenging, with only those in the immediate vicinity of the Bishop able to fully hear his words. The Bishop, clad in his ceremonial robes and wearing a traditional wig, delivers his sermon with fervor and conviction. The peers, dressed in their formal attire, listen intently, their expressions reflecting a deep sense of reverence and contemplation. The black and white engraving, produced by an unknown artist, captures the essence of the scene with remarkable detail and precision. The print offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when religious observances held a central place in British society. The image is a testament to the enduring power of faith and the importance of communal worship, even amidst the bustle and chaos of urban life. It is a poignant reminder of the role that religious institutions played in shaping the cultural and social fabric of 19th century Britain.
