Black Prince Strawberry Plant, grown by Mr. Cuthill, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Black Prince Strawberry Plant, grown by Mr. Cuthill, 1850. For this prolific and early kind of strawberry, Mr. Cuthill, of Camberwell, has just received a certificate of merit from the Horticultural Society, for well-ripened examples from the open ground. The Black Prince is now becoming universally cultivated, more especially for early crops: it is well flavoured, and very productive. The Black Prince also gained a prize from the Botanic Society, Regent's Park, last year, so that it has now been well proved: it travels well, and will keep longer on the plant after it is ripe, and the fruit keep longer after it is picked, than any other sort. It is the king of strawberries for preserving, being ten days before any other good sort, and an enormous bearer. Mr. Cuthill has sold it...at four shillings a pound: the sharp frost on the 10th of May cut up all the early blossoms, or he would have had it in much earlier'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Black Prince Strawberry Plant, grown by the esteemed horticulturist, Mr. Cuthill, in the year 1850. The Black Prince Strawberry was a groundbreaking discovery in the world of strawberry cultivation, earning Mr. Cuthill a certificate of merit from the Horticultural Society for its exceptional quality and early ripening. The Black Prince Strawberry was not only prized for its early harvest but also for its rich, well-developed flavor and remarkable productivity. This strawberry variety had already gained recognition from the Botanic Society in Regent's Park the previous year, solidifying its reputation as a superior strawberry. The Black Prince's unique qualities extended beyond its taste and yield. It was also known for its ability to travel well and keep longer on the plant after ripening, making it an ideal choice for preserving. The fruit itself would keep longer after picking than any other sort, making it a valuable asset for those seeking to enjoy the taste of fresh strawberries even in the colder months. Despite the early frost on May 10th, which damaged the early blossoms and delayed the harvest, the Black Prince Strawberry continued to thrive and was eventually sold at the impressive price of four shillings a pound. This photograph serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Black Prince Strawberry and the dedication of Mr. Cuthill in cultivating this remarkable variety.
