EDITORS COMMENTS
The Blind Beggar Tricked by Lazarillo, an etching on ivory laid paper by the Dutch artist Thomas Wyck, depicts a poignant scene from the Spanish picaresque novel "Lazarillo de Tormes" written by an anonymous author in the 16th century. In this image, the elderly blind beggar, with a white cane in hand, is being deceived by his young apprentice Lazarillo, who is hiding behind a column, holding a black and white checkered hat. The old man reaches out to touch the hat, believing it to be an offering from a kind-hearted passerby, while Lazarillo, with a mischievous grin, prepares to take the money from the unsuspecting beggar's hand. The contrast between the innocence of the blind man and the cunning of the boy creates a thought-provoking commentary on the complexities of poverty and the human condition during the Baroque era. This etching, a masterpiece from the Dutch Golden Age, is now part of the permanent collection at the Art Institute of Chicago and is a testament to the enduring power of literature to inspire great works of art.
