EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Boats on the Nile, c1838-1839" by David Roberts showcases a picturesque scene of life along the iconic river. The artist, a Scottish traveler named David Roberts, extensively explored Egypt and the Holy Land during his journeys in the 19th century. His sketches of various sites were later lithographed by Louis Haghe, a renowned Victorian lithographer. In this particular artwork, we are transported to the riverbank where boats gracefully sail on the tranquil waters of the Nile. The vibrant colors used in this watercolor painting bring out the beauty of both nature and human activity. In the foreground, we witness an intriguing display of ancient technology as water is being raised using a shaduf - an irrigation tool commonly used in Egypt. The presence of people aboard these boats adds depth to this artistic portrayal, giving us a glimpse into daily life along one of history's most significant rivers. This print not only captures transportation and water supply methods but also provides insight into Egyptian culture and geography. Displayed at London's Victoria and Albert Museum, this artwork is part of a larger collection that gained immense popularity when published in book form. Through his meticulous attention to detail and skillful use of color, David Roberts has immortalized this moment in time for all art enthusiasts to appreciate. "
