The Bow of Ulysses, 1875. Artist: Joseph Swain

The Bow of Ulysses, 1875. The Liberal opposition had to choose a new leader following Mr Gladstones resignation from office following the Liberal defeat in the General Election of 1874. The principal candidates are shown in this cartoon. They are Lord Hartington, Mr William Forster (holding the bow), Mr George Goschen, Mr Robert Lowe (second left) and Sir William Harcourt. Punch printed this cartoon before news arrived that Mr Forster had declined candidature. The meeting was held at the Reform Club and was presided over by Mr John Bright. Eventually, Lord Spencer Compton Cavendish was selected as leader of the Liberal Party. Lord Granville became the leader in the Lords. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 6, 1875

The Bow of Ulysses, 1875

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures a significant moment in British political history. Depicting the contenders for leadership within the Liberal Party after Mr Gladstone's resignation, this cartoon by Joseph Swain offers a glimpse into the intense and competitive nature of politics during the late 19th century. The central focus of the image is Mr William Forster, holding a bow symbolizing strength and power. Surrounding him are other prominent figures vying for leadership, including Lord Hartington, George Goschen, Robert Lowe (with his distinctive beard), and Sir William Harcourt. The meeting took place at the Reform Club under the guidance of Mr John Bright. Interestingly, news arrived shortly after this cartoon was printed that Mr Forster had declined candidacy. Eventually, Lord Spencer Compton Cavendish emerged as leader of the Liberal Party with Lord Granville leading in the Lords. This black-and-white engraving showcases not only political figures but also highlights their attire and footwear – from tunics to sandals – reflecting both their aristocratic status and their connection to classical literature such as "Ulysses". The satire embedded within this artwork adds an element of humor while shedding light on important historical events. "The Bow of Ulysses" serves as a reminder of Britain's rich political heritage and provides insight into how leaders were chosen during this era. It stands as an enduring testament to Joseph Swain's artistic talent and his ability to capture complex concepts through visual representation.
