EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Brazilian Sugar-Mill, 1854," offers a glimpse into the interior of a sugar mill house on a Brazilian plantation during the grinding season. The mill, an improved design patented by Messrs. de Mornay in 1851, is shown in operation, providing a powerful pressure to the canes. Dr. Domingos de Souza Leao, the estate owner, introduced this innovation into Brazil soon after its inception. Two black women are seen working diligently, feeding the mill with canes, while others bring them from a nearby heap on the right, where they have been unloaded from carts. The canes pass between two large rollers, extracting the juice, which is then conducted by troughs to the boiling-house. This mill yielded an impressive 70 to 74 lbs. of juice from 100 lbs. of canes, significantly more than the 55 to 60 lbs. obtained from mills in use in the West Indies during that era. The advancements in sugar mill technology, as depicted in this print, represent the progression towards greater efficiency and productivity in the agricultural industry. The image, reminiscent of the 19th century, portrays a scene of industrialization and mechanization, with steam power playing a crucial role. The mill's cogs and wheels, as well as the oversight of Caucasian overseers, reflect the societal dynamics of the time. The print, originally published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, offers a unique window into the past, showcasing the intersection of nature, technology, and labor in the sugar industry.
